Chinch bug damage shows as roughly circular patches that fade from green to straw, usually in the sunniest, driest part of the yard, and UF says infestations peak in early July. Water between 5 and 10 in the morning, the Extension office advises, because evening irrigation encourages disease.

Mounds favor sidewalk edges, driveway seams and the soil beside a slab.

White, waxy spirals under the leaves of a coconut palm or gumbo limbo are the work of the rugose spiraling whitefly. UF/IFAS places St. Lucie among the eight counties reporting maximum damage from this pest, which has been recorded on more than a hundred plant species. The adults are about three times the size of ordinary whiteflies and sluggish. The nuisance is what lands beneath an infested tree: honeydew, wax and sooty mold on cars and patios, and debris that can clog pool filters.

Port St. Lucie has been a city only since 1961 and is already the sixth most populous in Florida. Much of it stands on land that was ranch or farm within living memory, which explains a good deal about its pests.

No municipality in St. Lucie County has more people than Port St. Lucie, which counted 204,851 residents in the 2020 census. It lies about 113 miles north of Miami on the Treasure Coast. It began in 1958, when General Development Corporation bought 40,000 acres along the North Fork of the St. Lucie River. Roughly 250 homes stood here when the city incorporated on April 27, 1961.
