The bark scorpion climbs, hides in block walls, woodpiles and under bark, and comes inside through loose door sweeps and torn screens. Africanized honey bees
Every wild honey bee colony in Arizona is Africanized to some degree. Colonies settle in hollow block walls, attics, crawl spaces and in-ground irrigation boxes, and an established colony can respond in large numbers. The noise and vibration of mowers, trimmers and blowers are known triggers. If bees chase you, cover your face, run to a car or building and shut the door, and never jump into a pool, because the bees wait for you to surface.
Desert subterranean termites
Extension entomologists list Heterotermes aureus as the most destructive termite in the region. New homes normally get a soil treatment under the slab and a final grade treatment along the stem wall. If your home is more than about five years old, that final treatment has likely broken down, so the stem wall should be checked at least twice a year for the pencil-thin mud tubes these termites build.
Turkestan cockroaches
First found in Arizona in 1982, the Turkestan cockroach is now common in the Phoenix area. It lives outdoors in water meter boxes, irrigation valve boxes and hollow block walls, and its numbers peak in June, when some wander inside. Males fly to lights on warm nights. Clearing leaf litter and potted plant clutter near doors and using bait stations outdoors keeps the numbers down before they reach the kitchen.
