Bullhead City lies on the east bank of the Colorado River in Mohave County, directly across from Laughlin, Nevada, at the southern end of Lake Mohave. The town grew up around the building of Davis Dam between 1942 and 1953, a dam first named for Bull's Head Rock, a landmark on the river. In 1984 Bullhead City, Riviera and Holiday Shores voted to incorporate together, and the 2020 census counted 41,348 residents.
Sitting at about 925 feet with only 5.40 inches of rain a year, Bullhead City is one of the hottest places in the country each summer. Heat drives scorpions and other hunters into block walls and shaded gaps, and the river and irrigated yards give mosquitoes and termites the moisture they need. Fall and winter bring visitors in motor homes, and many residents are retirees, so we plan around homes, rentals and seasonal stays alike.
