Bigheaded ants
In young landscapes the ant most likely to appear is the bigheaded ant (Pheidole megacephala), which UF/IFAS suspects spread in sod and replacement plants after the 2003 to 2005 hurricanes. It nests in soil and leaves little piles of loose sand on brick walks and driveways, at the base of walls and under pots. Minor workers are 2 millimeters long; the large-headed majors make up about 1 percent of foragers. It does not sting or harm structures.
German cockroaches
Where cartons come through the door, the German cockroach is the species to watch. It lives only inside buildings and, according to UF/IFAS, is carried in with boxes and bags from infested sites; restaurants, grocery stores and hotels are named among the places it troubles most, along with homes. Remove food, water and clutter, monitor with sticky traps and rely on baits.
Formosan and Asian subterranean termites
A recent build date does not keep subterranean termites out. They forage through soil and enter through small cracks or joints in a slab. Two imported Coptotermes species are established in Miami-Dade: the Formosan, whose colonies reach several million and forage about 100 meters, and the Asian, found in only four Florida counties. Damage from a mature colony can turn severe in a short time, and UF/IFAS says over-the-counter products are unlikely to be effective.
Ghost ants
Tiny ants that seem to vanish on a white countertop are usually ghost ants. The head and thorax are deep brown and the legs and abdomen milky white, on a body about 1.5 millimeters long. They go for sweets and tend honeydew-producing insects on plants. Indoors they nest in potted plants, wall voids and the spaces between cabinets and baseboards, and new nests bud off from old ones.
Container mosquitoes
Two container-breeding mosquitoes bite by day here. Aedes aegypti remains common in urban South Florida, and the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) has been in the state since it turned up at a tire dump near Jacksonville in 1986. Both lay eggs where water collects in flowerpots, buckets, tires and gutters. Miami-Dade County Mosquito Control recommends a Bti larvicide for water that cannot be dumped, such as ponds and bromeliads.
Spotted something?
Winters in Doral are short, dry and warm, with an occasional dip when a cold front passes. Indoor ant and roach activity continues regardless. The Asian subterranean termite swarms in these months, February through April, and its winged adults head for porch lights, lamps indoors and even video monitors.
April, May and June bring the Formosan subterranean termite's flights, thickest in May and timed for the minutes after sundown. West Indian drywood termites swarm in the same months. Wings piled at a doorway or on a windowsill are worth photographing and reporting.
Most of Doral's rain falls now, and the heat index regularly passes 100 degrees. Water standing in planters, drains and stored items breeds mosquitoes, and red imported fire ants leave waterlogged soil for higher, drier spots, sometimes indoors. Dump or treat standing water every week.
