Protecting Pine Hills Homes From Termites, Roaches and Roof Rats
Eastern and Formosan subterranean termites
UF termite records include Formosan subterranean termites taken in this part of west Orange County as early as 1994 and as recently as 2026, and the native eastern subterranean termite lives statewide. Both reach wood from the soil through mud tubes and feed along the grain, sometimes leaving only a paper-thin surface. Blistered or peeling wood near a bath, kitchen or exterior door deserves a closer look.
West Indian drywood termites
The West Indian drywood termite has also been collected in the Pine Hills area, most recently in 2026. It needs neither soil nor a leak: a colony starts directly in dry wood, and whole colonies get moved around inside infested wood and furniture. Soldiers appear after two to three years and winged termites at about five, so a colony can be years old before it ever swarms. The clue is gritty pellets collecting below tiny holes.
American and smokybrown cockroaches
The big roaches called palmetto bugs are mostly American cockroaches and their relatives the smokybrown, Australian and brown cockroaches, each 1.25 to 2 inches long. According to UF/IFAS they multiply outside, in mulch, fallen leaves, palms and hollow trees, and in garages, sewers and attics, then come indoors. They do poorly inside a house, so closing entry gaps and drying out garages and utility rooms beats repeated spraying.
Roof rats
Roof rats, Rattus rattus, are climbers. UF/IFAS Extension describes them as secretive, non-native rodents living chiefly in trees and the higher parts of houses, eating fruit, nuts, seeds, pet food and garbage. Its advice: keep limbs from overhanging the roof, close openings with steel mesh or hardware cloth, repair storm damage promptly and clear yard debris. Snap traps are the recommended tool; poison is a last resort because of the harm to wildlife.
Florida carpenter ants
Window and door frames that have soaked up rain or sprinkler water are prime sites for Florida carpenter ants. UF/IFAS notes that they do not tunnel in sound wood; they nest in existing voids and in soft, rotten wood, including walls with moisture seepage. Workers forage from just before sunset until about two hours after, so a flashlight check at dusk often shows the trail.
Spotted something?
Eastern subterranean termites swarm in the daytime from early January to April, typically on a warm, windless afternoon after rain. West Indian drywood termites begin flying in April. Dry weather is the time to cut limbs back from the roof.
Formosan termites swarm on warm evenings in these months and collect at porch and window lights. Carpenter ants send out winged ants too, which turn up along window ledges and sliding glass doors and are easy to mistake for termites: an ant's antennae are elbowed and its waist is narrow, while a termite's waist is broad.
Storms fill buckets, tires and clogged gutters, and mosquitoes follow. Orange County Mosquito Control, whose office is on Silver Star Road, asks residents to tip out standing water and toss whatever holds it. Heavy rain also drives American cockroaches and fire ants toward dry ground, including indoors.

They are. In Florida the name palmetto bug gets pinned on a handful of big outdoor roaches, chiefly the American, smokybrown, Australian and brown cockroaches, plus the Florida woods cockroach. They are not the small German cockroach, which lives only indoors with people. The large ones breed outside and wander in, so exclusion and less mulch against the walls handle most cases.
