Red imported fire ants
Solenopsis invicta piles up soil mounds, seldom wider than 18 inches, in open lawn, beside sidewalks, under patio slabs and inside electrical boxes. Step on one and workers pour out to sting; a white pustule forms by the following day, and a few people react far more seriously. A soaking storm can drive a colony to higher ground or into the house.
Southern chinch bugs
This quarter-inch bug feeds at the base of St. Augustinegrass, and UF/IFAS ranks the central and southern counties as the hardest hit. Yellow-brown patches start along sunny, dry lawn edges and widen as the insects walk to fresh grass. Numbers crest in early July, and thick thatch gives the bugs cover. Adults are black with white wings; confirm they are present before treating.
Subterranean termites
On the University of Florida's online map, Formosan subterranean termites have been collected again and again in and near Brandon, alongside the native eastern subterranean termite that occurs statewide. Both nest in soil and climb to wood through mud tubes. Door frames are frequent entry points because doors sit on expansion joints in the slab. UF/IFAS urges a yearly check by a trained inspector and warns that mulch heaped against siding hides the tubes.
Roof rats
Citrus rat and fruit rat are two more names for the roof rat, fitting for a community where orange packing once paid the bills. These nocturnal climbers eat fruit while it still hangs, and a UF/IFAS Extension agent names them the first suspect when a citrus trunk shows gnawing. They bed down in attics and soffits. Metal guards on trunks, prompt picking and limbs cut back from the roof all lower the pressure.
Florida carpenter ants
A survey of four Florida metro areas, Tampa Bay among them, found Florida carpenter ants behind roughly 20 percent of homeowner ant complaints. They neither sting nor eat wood; instead they move into existing voids and lumber already softened by leaks, such as window frames soaked by sprinklers, and UF/IFAS lists the roots of citrus trees among outdoor nest sites. Winged ants on window ledges from April to June are often taken for termites.
Spotted something?
Brandon can have several nights in the 30s while Tampa stays in the 40s and 50s. Chinch bugs ride out the cold around the roots of the grass and resume where they stopped. Native subterranean termites start their afternoon flights in January.
