University of Florida termite records show West Indian drywood termites collected again and again inside the city of Naples since 2017. This termite needs no soil. It lives in the wood itself, from roof framing to furniture, and UF says it is the reason behind almost every structural fumigation in the state. Look for small mounds of hard pellets beneath a tiny hole, or discarded wings between April and June. In a house closed for summer nobody sees those clues, so ask for a check when you return.

Ghost ants, tiny with pale legs, behave similarly and nest in potted plants and wall voids.

No-see-ums come from the same marsh and mangrove edges. Standard screening does not keep them out, so lanais near the bay need the finer no-see-um mesh.

Filling empty burrows, removing dense cover and putting metal guards on trunks and pilings are the UF-recommended deterrents.

Does a Naples home with drywood termites always need fumigation?

Not always. UF lists two ways to control an active drywood infestation: spot treatment, where the infested wood is drilled and treated, and fumigation of the whole structure. Spot work suits a colony confined to one reachable area. Fumigation is used when colonies are scattered or hidden. An inspection that maps the pellets and damage tells you which applies.

What are the tiny ants in my Naples kitchen?

Most often ghost ants or white-footed ants. A ghost ant is barely 1.5 millimeters long, dark in front and pale behind, and goes for sweets. White-footed ants are larger, black with yellowish feet, and trail in from trees and shrubs. Both build many connected nests, so sprays give short relief while baits placed along the trails do the real work.

How can I cut down no-see-ums on my Naples lanai?

Start with the screen. Regular window screen does not exclude biting midges, while mesh sold as no-see-um screen does. They bite mostly at dusk, overnight and in the morning, so plan lanai time around those hours and wear a DEET-based repellent, which UF names as the main repellent for midges. UF also reports that a bifenthrin barrier spray reduced numbers of the common coastal species.
