Red imported fire ants
Red imported fire ants build soil mounds that UF says are seldom wider than 18 inches, with a typical colony near 80,000 workers. Disturb one and the ants pour out to bite and sting, and a white pustule shows up at each sting by the following day. They also nest under sidewalk edges, driveways and patio slabs and inside electrical boxes. Bait spread across the whole yard and direct treatment of single mounds are the two standard answers.
Fleas and ticks
The cat flea is the flea UF finds most often in Florida. Its larvae grow in spots shielded from sun and rain where animals rest, and adult numbers crest in August and September. The brown dog tick is the odd one among ticks: it can live its entire life indoors, and owners often first notice it climbing a wall or curtain. For both, UF's outline is the same: treat the pet, the house and the yard together, and keep grass and weeds short.
Southern chinch bugs
St. Augustinegrass is the lawn grass used most in Florida, and the southern chinch bug is its main insect enemy. Feeding drains the sap, so patches yellow, turn brown and die, usually beginning at dry lawn edges or in full sun, with infestations peaking in early July. UF recommends mowing at 3 to 4 inches, holding back on nitrogen, watering only when the blades begin to wilt and removing thatch. Some populations now resist insecticides, so a confirmed diagnosis comes before any product.
Subterranean termites
Lehigh's building boom ran from 2003 to 2007, which puts thousands of its houses near the twenty-year mark. Native eastern subterranean termites occur statewide; one colony may hold up to a million insects and forage 150 feet from the nest. UF's termite map also shows Formosan subterranean termites collected around Buckingham, just northwest of Lehigh Acres, in 2022, 2024 and 2026. Mud tubes climbing the foundation and winged swarmers in spring are the signs to act on.
Mosquitoes
Lehigh Acres sits well inland, yet salt marsh mosquitoes still arrive. UF notes that the black salt marsh mosquito has a long flight range and turns up far from the coast, and the neighboring Collier district puts that range at up to 40 miles. The Lee County Mosquito Control District, whose office is on Homestead Road in Lehigh Acres, handles area-wide work. Summer storms add container breeders, so tip out buckets, toys, tires and plant saucers every week.
Spotted something?
The dry months are termite season for the native species. Eastern subterranean termites release winged swarmers on warm, windless afternoons from January to April, usually following rain. Finding them indoors, or finding mud tubes on the slab edge, is the cue for an inspection.
Formosan subterranean termites swarm in the evening during these months, with the heaviest flights in May, and fire ant mating flights take off on warm, sunny days after rain. We like to begin yard-wide bait programs now, ahead of the summer rains.
Chinch bug damage peaks in early July, flea numbers climb toward their August and September high, and afternoon storms fill every container in the yard. Saturated soil also pushes fire ant colonies to higher ground or into houses. Mow St. Augustine high and empty standing water weekly.
