Salt marsh and container mosquitoes
UF calls the black salt marsh mosquito very common along eastern coasts and responsible for a large share of mosquito spraying in Florida. Its eggs wait in moist soil and hatch together when rain floods them. Volusia County Mosquito Control counts more than 40 species and tests sentinel chickens weekly as an early warning for the West Nile, Eastern equine and St. Louis encephalitis viruses.
No-see-ums
Biting midges are the specks you feel before you see. UF notes that several coastal species breed in marshes and mangrove swamps, that many are under one twenty-fourth of an inch long, and that regular window screen does not keep them out. Most biting happens from dusk through the night into morning, so the mesh size on a porch decides whether evenings outside are comfortable.
Drywood termites
Salt air does not bother drywood termites. UF says the West Indian drywood termite is found statewide yet turns up most often near the coast, lives only in buildings and furniture, and needs no contact with soil. UF's map for the Daytona Beach area also records the southeastern drywood termite, Incisitermes snyderi. The telltale sign is a small pile of hard, six-sided pellets beneath a pinhole in wood.
Subterranean termites, including Formosan
Soil-nesting termites are here as well. UF's records for Daytona Beach include eastern subterranean termites and, since 2011, the Formosan subterranean termite, whose colonies can number in the millions. Formosan swarmers fly after sunset in late spring and head for lights; UF notes that lights can draw them to boats as well as buildings, a point worth knowing along the Halifax.
American cockroaches
UF describes the American cockroach as present in buildings throughout Florida, especially commercial ones, and as a resident of sewers and drainage systems that travels up through plumbing. UF recommends caulking wall penetrations at ground level and clearing rotting leaves to make a building less inviting. Outdoors it shares mulch, woodpiles and palms with the smokybrown and Florida woods cockroaches, the rest of the group nicknamed palmetto bugs.
Norway rats and roof rats
UF/IFAS notes that Norway rats are most often found along coasts and canals, and Extension describes them as excellent swimmers, which fits a city wrapped around a lagoon. Roof rats, Florida's main suburban rat, climb instead: they den in attics, soffits and hollow walls and gnaw on wiring. Sealing entry points, securing trash and bringing pet food in overnight come before any trapping.
Spotted something?
These are the cooler, drier months. Late winter and early spring can be dry enough for brush fires and watering restrictions, and UF notes that southern chinch bugs hit St. Augustinegrass hardest where it grows on dry, sandy or shell ground. Native subterranean termites begin their afternoon swarms in January.
Three kinds of termites overlap now: West Indian drywood termites make most of their flights from April to June, Formosan termites swarm after sunset, and native subterranean species finish their season. Lovebugs have their spring flight in April and May.
Daily thundershowers refill every container and flood the soil where salt marsh mosquito eggs wait. Storms belong to this season too: Hurricane Charley severely damaged Daytona Beach in 2004, and wood left wet after any storm gives termites the moisture they need.
