Formosan subterranean termites
UF/IFAS Extension Escambia County put it bluntly in 2013: Formosan termites were swarming all over the area and are here to stay. University of Florida collection data agrees, with dozens of Formosan subterranean termite finds around Pensacola since 1989. A mature colony holds several million insects, packs voids with a soil-and-wood material called carton and can hollow out live trees.
Red imported fire ants
Pensacola has a place in fire ant history: UF entomologists say the species entered the United States from Brazil through either this port or Mobile between 1933 and 1945. A mound rarely tops 18 inches across, yet nests also turn up beneath patio slabs, beside sidewalks and inside electrical boxes. Disturb one and the workers rush out to bite and sting.
Carpenter ants
The Florida carpenter ant nests in existing voids and hollows out wood softened by leaks around doors, windows and plumbing. The black carpenter ant, which UF places in Florida's panhandle, is the wood-damaging one. Foraging happens after dark, and satellite nests often sit 20 to 100 feet from the parent colony, so we follow the trails back. Winged swarmers show up from April to June.
Mosquitoes
Escambia County Mosquito Control teaches the Five D's and an S: limit time outside from dusk to dawn, drain standing water, dress in light-colored long sleeves, use DEET and keep screens in good repair. The county also stocks mosquito-eating Gambusia fish in permanent water and drains tires and other containers. July alone averages nearly eight inches of rain, so containers refill constantly.
Tawny mole crickets
Escambia County's Extension office identifies the tawny mole cricket as the most common mole cricket in the area. It tunnels under the lawn eating roots, and UF notes bahiagrass and bermudagrass are injured most. To test a lawn, pour 1.5 ounces of dish soap in two gallons of water over four square feet and count what surfaces within three minutes; two to four crickets justify treatment.
American and smokybrown cockroaches
The big roaches people here call palmetto bugs are mostly American and smokybrown cockroaches. UF reports that American cockroaches live mainly in sewers and drainage systems, sometimes more than 5,000 in one manhole, and reach homes through the plumbing. The smokybrown and the native Florida woods cockroach stay in mulch, leaf litter and tree holes until they wander indoors. Keep vent screens intact and seal around pipes.
Spotted something?
Freezes come about 11 days each winter, typically between December 12 and February 14, and some winters bring none. Native subterranean termites take wing on warm afternoons from January on, so winged insects on a sunny windowsill in winter are worth identifying.
From early April through late June, Formosan termites take flight right after sundown and mass around porch lights and street lamps. Escambia Extension has held its homeowner termite classes in early April for that reason. The first lovebug flight arrives in May.
Thunderstorms are routine, and July is the rainiest month. In April 2014 at least 20 inches fell within 24 hours. Standing water breeds mosquitoes, and UF notes that after heavy rain a fire ant colony may move to higher ground or into a building.
Escambia Extension notes the worst storms usually arrive in August and September. After Hurricane Michael in 2018 the office warned that paper wasps, hornets and yellowjackets turn aggressive when wind and flooding destroy their nests. Lovebugs return for a second flight in September.

Yes. Escambia County's Extension office has run homeowner programs on Formosan termites and describes them as here to stay, and UF's termite map holds dozens of local records going back to 1989. They swarm at dusk in late spring. Because colonies are so large, the Extension recommendation is a professional treatment backed by an annual inspection.
Expect them twice a year, in May and again in September. According to Escambia County Extension, the first lovebug ever collected and recorded in Florida was found in this county in 1949. Adults live only three to four days and do not bite or sting. Wash them off vehicles soon after driving.
Bait is the most dependable tool. UF explains that workers carry bait home and feed it to the queen and brood, which makes it slower but more effective than drenching, dusting or fumigating a single mound. It can be sprinkled around individual mounds or broadcast across the lawn.
