Slope soil away from the house, remove wood scraps and stumps near the slab, and set wooden steps on concrete footings that lift them 6 inches clear of the ground.
Smokybrown and Oriental cockroaches
AgriLife describes the smokybrown cockroach as an outdoor species of humid Texas that hides in mulch, ground cover, soffits and attic eaves, then wanders inside. The Oriental cockroach, about 1 1/4 inches long, prefers cool, damp ground-level spots such as crawl spaces and floor drains. Both respond to keeping drain traps full, screening soffits and baiting beds.
Paper wasps
The Texas Insects guide says a paper wasp nest is a single open comb of hexagonal cells hanging by one stalk, holding about 20 to 30 adults at maturity. Each spring a queen picks the spot and starts it, and the colony declines in late summer. For a nest hanging from an eave it suggests a high-pressure water spray from a distance, with people and pets kept away.

Termite swarmers show up between early spring and early summer, according to AgriLife, and paper wasp founding queens start fresh nests on eaves and rails. Spring rain fills the creek channels and yard low spots, which is when mosquito larvae first show up.
