Scorpions
Texas A&M AgriLife's field guide counts about eighteen scorpion species in Texas and says numbers rise toward the west, so South Texas offers more variety than the eastern half of the state. Adults measure one to three inches, see poorly and feel their way along surfaces. They turn up under loose bark and in trash piles. All scorpions can sting, the guide notes, though only a few are dangerous.
American cockroaches
Roaches of up to two inches are common here. According to AgriLife, the American cockroach is reddish brown with a pale margin behind the head and lives outdoors among wood piles and palm trees. It also lives in sewers. Daytime finds it in dark, damp attics and basements, and its flat body lets it squeeze past loose doors and through gaps where pipes or electric lines enter a wall.
Subterranean termites
AgriLife's Texas termite page says subterranean termites live throughout the state and nest in soil, building tubes of soil and saliva that shield them and hold in moisture. Reproductives swarm in spring, by day, usually after a rain. A colony takes two to four years to mature and can hold 21,000 to 365,000 termites. Workers tunnel into structural timbers and eat the cellulose in wood and paper.
Red imported fire ants
Webb County appears on the Texas Department of Agriculture's quarantine list for the red imported fire ant, along with 188 other entries. AgriLife says mounds can rise 18 inches and favor sunny lawns, parks and pastures. Workers sting over and over, and the burn usually becomes a small white blister quickly. Irrigated Laredo lawns give the ants the open, sunny ground they like.
Black widow spiders
AgriLife's field guide says the western black widow largely replaces the southern species across the western half of Texas. Either way, widow habits match. The irregular mesh web sits near the ground in a dark, weather-sheltered corner, under stones, in dirt banks, in sheds or in a trash pile. Venom is highly virulent, but this shy spider flees if its web is disturbed.
Kissing bugs
AgriLife entomologists say kissing bugs, the Triatoma species, turn up in and around Texas houses and often live in wood rat nests. Adults are drawn to lights. The Chagas disease concern applies mainly to southern Texas and areas farther south, where the bugs can carry the parasite behind it. Brush heaps and animal kennels beside a house can bring the bugs close.
Spotted something?
Termite swarmers fly by day after spring showers, and fire ant mating flights follow rain too. The first 100-degree afternoons are close, which pushes scorpions and spiders to look for cooler hiding places such as sheds, garages and wall voids.
July and August highs average just above 100 degrees, and Laredo reached 115 as recently as June 19, 2023. Roaches follow moisture to drains and meter boxes. Kissing bugs fly to porch lights on summer nights, when the heat is at its worst.
January lows average about 47 degrees, with an occasional hard freeze. AgriLife entomologists say cockroaches, spiders and scorpions move indoors as the weather cools, and mice follow. Seal gaps around pipes and doors before the first cold snap.
