Fire Ants, Termites and Ditch Mosquitoes in Pearland Neighborhoods
Red imported fire ants
Fire ants favor open, sunny ground, which describes most new lawns, and their mounds can reach 18 inches high. Texas A&M AgriLife's answer for an infested yard is the Two-Step Method: a bait broadcast once or twice a year, plus spot treatment of the mounds causing trouble. A sting burns, then forms a white pustule within days, and about 1 percent of people are hypersensitive to the venom.
Subterranean termites
AgriLife estimates that an unprotected Texas house has about a 70 percent chance of some termite damage within 25 years. On a slab, termites come up where plumbing passes through the concrete, so the agency urges owners to keep an access hatch at the bath trap and check it for mud tubes. Brazoria County is also one of the places where Formosan subterranean termites have been detected; their larger colonies do the same damage faster.
Ditch and floodwater mosquitoes
The Brazoria County Mosquito Control District applies larvicide to roadside ditches, low-lying areas and storm drains, sets light and gravid traps weekly and sprays by truck and by air. Watching for West Nile virus is one of its priorities. After heavy rain the first biters are floodwater mosquitoes such as Psorophora columbiae; AgriLife says a temporary pool needs to stand only three or four days to produce them.
Smokybrown cockroaches
Landscaped beds are the smokybrown cockroach's territory. This dark roach, about an inch and a quarter long, prefers protected, moist, warm spots out of moving air: ground cover, mulch, soffits and the eaves of attics. Young nymphs are black with two white bands. AgriLife reports that granular baits sprinkled lightly through ground cover and mulched beds work well outdoors.
Cat fleas
Most flea trouble on Texas pets and in homes comes from the cat flea, which also feeds on dogs and wildlife. A female starts laying within two days of her first blood meal, about 27 eggs a day. Outdoors the larvae survive only in moist, shaded spots where pets rest; dry air or soil hotter than 95 degrees kills them. State health officials add that flea-borne typhus has become established in the Greater Houston area.

Fire ant colonies send out mating flights on afternoons after rain, and native subterranean termites swarm in daylight. Bait is most effective between 65 and 95 degrees, so spring is the usual time for the first broadcast. Formosan termites follow with night flights beginning in early May.
The county's spray trucks are a common sight through the summer and fall months, and aerial spraying is added when landing counts climb. Fleas build up wherever shade and humidity protect the larvae, so pet bedding and shaded runs need attention. Fire ants make a second round of mating flights in fall.
Cold snaps are the wrong time to spread fire ant bait, which is meant for warmer days. Winter suits the dry work instead: pulling mulch back from the slab, correcting the grade and removing wood that touches soil. Smokybrown cockroaches take about 600 days to mature, so they are present in every season.

Pearland lies in northern Brazoria County, about 16 miles south of downtown Houston, with parts reaching into Harris and Fort Bend counties. The townsite was platted in 1894 and named for its pear trees.
