League City fronts Clear Creek and brackish Clear Lake at roughly 20 feet above sea level, with marinas on the water and century-old live oaks along Main Street. Salt marsh mosquitoes, Formosan termites and tree-dwelling roaches come with that setting.
League City had 114,392 residents in the 2020 census and lies 23 miles southeast of Houston, mostly in Galveston County with a small section north of Clear Creek in Harris County. The creek borders the city on the north and empties into Clear Lake, a brackish harbor on Galveston Bay that holds one of the country's largest concentrations of recreational boats and marinas. About 1.77 of the city's 53 square miles are water.
The first resident of the town proper, George W. Butler, came from Louisiana in 1854. In 1907 J. C. League had two railroad flatcars of live oaks delivered for residents to plant, and many of those Butler Oaks still shade Main Street and the League City Historic District, where 19th century houses remain. Between 2000 and 2005 the city overtook Galveston as the county's largest.
