Texas A&M's city bugs blog explains that roof rats get into attics by way of gaps at garage doors, roof vents, flashing and the lower edge of siding. Footsteps in the ceiling and droppings are the giveaways. It suggests seals made of cement, low-expansion foam and steel wool, and calling a pest professional if roof access or trapping feels risky.
Red imported fire ants
The Texas fire ant program says a lawn with more than 5 mounds per quarter acre usually calls for control. A bait check is simple: put out a small amount, and and ants swarming it inside an hour show the bait is fresh and they are foraging. Speed of kill varies from about 2 weeks to several months, depending on the active ingredient.
German cockroaches
AgriLife lists the German cockroach as the most prolific indoor species, light brown with two dark stripes behind the head and about 1/2 to 5/8 inch long. A generation takes only about 100 days, and it lives indoors only. Baits placed near hiding spots work best, according to the extension, while sprays and total-release foggers are less effective.

Statewide, termite swarming peaks from spring into early summer, so wings near windows or lights deserve a call. Fire ants will not pick up bait when the air is below 65 degrees, so wait for warmer afternoons before relying on a lawn application.
