Fleas
Most flea trouble in Texas comes from the cat flea, which also lives on raccoons, opossums and coyotes. Look for larvae in moist, shaded spots near pet resting areas; they die when soil gets hotter than 95 degrees or humidity drops under 50 percent. A grown flea can wait inside its cocoon for as long as five months, then emerge within seconds when a host walks by.
Mosquitoes
AgriLife Extension entomologists describe three waves of mosquitoes after a wet spell. Floodwater species hatch first from eggs laid in low ground and bite aggressively from dawn to dusk. Container breeders in the genus Aedes come next, using buckets, tires, wheelbarrows and gutters. Last are Culex mosquitoes, the West Nile carriers, which want stagnant water such as pooled creek beds and storm drains and show up as the ground dries.
Spotted something?
Winged termites commonly appear in March and April. They look like ants but lack the pinched waist between thorax and abdomen. Fire ant mounds rise after every rain, mosquitoes find the first full buckets, and chiggers wake up as the weather warms.
In the heat, fire ants tunnel deep and may come indoors for water, and fleas build up wherever pets rest in the shade. Paper wasp nests under eaves hold 20 to 30 adults by now; the extension advice is to treat in late evening, once the wasps have returned to the comb.
By the third weekend of October, when the city holds Deutschen Pfest in Pfluger Park, fall pests are in full swing. Agricultural termites tube over grass after late-summer rain, field crickets gather under lights, and entomologists recommend a fall round of fire ant bait to thin colonies before spring.
