Subterranean termites
Texas A&M AgriLife says termites feed on the cellulose in wood, paper and plant products, and old buildings supply plenty. They reach structures through wood in contact with soil and through shelter tubes over foundation cracks. Moisture from defective plumbing, roof leaks or poor gutters supports them. A mature native colony counts about 250,000 workers, and swarmers appear in spring.
Red imported fire ants
Fire ant mounds, up to about 18 inches tall, are common in sunny lawns, pastures and open fields, often near logs, stumps and trees. An average colony has 100,000 to 500,000 workers. Mating flights follow rainy periods, usually in the afternoon and mainly in spring and fall. Colonies can also form in or under buildings.
Tawny crazy ants
Texas A&M entomologists have confirmed this ant in Montgomery County and about thirty other counties since it was first found near Houston in 2002. The ants are 1/8 inch long and reddish brown, wander without clear trails, and nest beneath rocks, logs and debris. They crowd into electrical equipment and can short it out, and they often ignore ant baits.
Paper wasps and yellowjackets
Paper wasps attach nests to eaves, attics, garages, sheds and barns, each nest an open comb of chewed wood. Yellowjackets may build in the ground or in building voids and scavenge near open food. A disturbed nest triggers many stings, and AgriLife says a small share of people who have large local reactions may later have a serious allergic reaction.
Norway and roof rats
A Norway rat burrows beneath foundations, floors and stored goods, while the roof rat nests in attics and double walls. Signs include droppings, tracks, gnawing and greasy smears along runways, and rodents are more active after dark. AgriLife calls an integrated program best: traps or bait, removal of shelter, food and water, and rat-proofing.

Termite swarmers appear, wasp queens begin nests and fire ants fly after rain. In an old house, look at sills, porch posts and any wood that touches the ground, and watch for discarded wings in windows.
Wasp workers make up most of the insects on a nest during summer, so a small spring comb becomes a busy one. Mosquitoes breed in rain-filled containers near the lake, termites stay active wherever wood is damp, and crazy ants favor moist spots such as potted plants and debris piles.
Males and new queens leave wasp nests in fall, and fire ants fly again after rain. Rat litters follow the season: Norway rats peak in spring and fall, roof rats in winter and spring, so attics and eaves deserve a look for droppings.
