Scorpions, Termites and Fire Ants From the River Walk to the Hill Country Edge
Striped bark scorpions
Texas A&M ranks the striped bark scorpion first among Texas scorpions, a yellowish tan arachnid with two broad dark stripes that reaches about 2.5 inches. It does not burrow, it favors dead vegetation, fallen logs and human dwellings, and it often turns up in attics. In hot weather it moves down into living areas. Firewood stacks, rock or brick piles and landscape timbers near the house make good shelter.
Native and Formosan subterranean termites
Bexar County also counts among the places Texas A&M names for Formosan subterranean termites, and native subterranean termites live here too. South Texas swarming begins as early as January and February, and Formosan swarmers fly on late May and June nights. Termites need moisture, so leaking plumbing, roof leaks and air conditioner drips can feed them. Mud shelter tubes on a foundation are a sign of activity.
Red imported fire ants
Fire ants prefer open, sunny ground such as lawns, pastures and parks. Mounds can reach about 18 inches, and a colony typically counts 100,000 to 500,000 workers. Colonies often migrate, so a new mound can appear several hundred feet away almost overnight. Mating flights come most often in spring and fall, in the afternoon shortly after a rainy period.
West Nile mosquitoes
San Antonio Metro Health describes West Nile virus as endemic in Bexar County. City mosquito work centers on public property such as parks, trails and ditches, so standing water in your own yard is yours to manage. The southern house mosquito, a major carrier of West Nile, breeds in contaminated water and bites from evening into early morning. Emptying plant saucers and trash bin water removes breeding sites.
German and American cockroaches
The German cockroach lives its whole life indoors, arrives in groceries or boxes and moves readily from apartment to apartment, so one unit can supply a whole building. The American cockroach is more common in commercial buildings and sewers and comes in through floor drains. Texas A&M says sanitation, sealing and baits work better than bug bombs.
Yellowjackets and paper wasps
In Texas, southern yellowjacket nests can range from a few inches to 6 feet across and hold up to 20,000 workers, and most are built underground in gardens, flower beds and embankments. Paper wasps hang open-comb nests under eaves. Colonies peak in August or September, and wasps defend a disturbed nest vigorously, so Texas A&M warns people with allergies not to attempt removal.

About a dozen nights a year fall below freezing, and snow comes about once every four years. South Texas termite swarms can begin in January and February. Overwintering paper wasp queens often slip into attics, chimneys and homes during warm spells.
Formosan termite swarmers fly after dark and collect around lights. Fire ant mating flights are common in spring, and new mounds rise on lawns afterward. Mosquitoes become active as water begins to collect around the city.
Average highs reach about 95 degrees, and attics get hotter still, so scorpions move into living areas. Yellowjacket colonies grow toward their August and September peak, and mosquitoes breed in any stagnant water that collects after a storm.
Fire ants have a second round of mating flights, and yellowjackets produce males and next year's queens in October and November. Queens then look for sheltered places to overwinter, including attics, which is the moment to seal gaps.
