Pavement Ants, Termites and Wetland Mosquitoes on the Wasatch Front
Pavement ants
USU Extension calls the pavement ant northern Utah's most common pest ant in and around structures. Nests sit in soil along pavement edges, patios, driveways and foundations, often marked by small volcano-shaped mounds, and trails can run more than 30 feet. Ants may stay active in winter near heated slabs and ducts. USU recommends fixing moisture, trimming plants off the structure, sealing entry points and using baits.
Odorous house ants
USU describes the odorous house ant as an emerging pest ant in Utah. Crushed workers give off a rotten, coconut-like odor. Colonies have multiple queens and split into many subcolonies, so they are hard to control, and indoors they favor leaks, condensation and water-damaged wood. USU rates sweet liquid baits as very effective when kept stocked, and warns that repellent sprays can scatter the ants.
Subterranean termites
Of the three termite types USU Extension lists for Utah, subterranean termites are the most common, while drywood and dampwood termites are uncommon. They nest in soil, sometimes more than 15 feet down, and reach buildings through foundation cracks or mud tubes. Signs include mud tubes, bubbling paint and clumpy brown debris near wood. USU advises yearly inspections of basements and crawl spaces.
Western black widows
USU's structural pest guide says the black widow prefers existing holes in dark, undisturbed places, including foundations, rock and wood piles, water meter and irrigation boxes, and spots near exterior lights. It hides by day and stays in its cobweb at night. USU rates the bite a serious risk for children and the elderly, and recommends sealing cracks, vacuuming webs, reducing clutter and fitting door sweeps.
Brown marmorated stink bugs
USU first detected the brown marmorated stink bug in Utah in 2012, in Salt Lake City, and says it is now established in Salt Lake County. From late fall through spring, adults gather on buildings and slip in through cracks, sheltering under eaves and in attics. They are harmless to people but give off an odor when disturbed. USU advises sealing openings with caulk and screens, and sweeping or vacuuming them up.
Mosquitoes from the Great Salt Lake wetlands
The Salt Lake City Mosquito Abatement District covers the city, about 110 square miles, plus unincorporated areas that include 63 square miles of freshwater wetlands around the Great Salt Lake, which produce large numbers of Aedes dorsalis and Culex tarsalis. The district tests mosquitoes for West Nile virus, St. Louis encephalitis and western equine encephalitis, and says West Nile is the most common pathogen in Utah's Culex.

January lows average near 24 degrees and about 60 inches of snow falls over a year. Pavement ants can remain active near heated slabs and ducts, and stink bugs shelter under eaves and in attics. Check eaves, attics and basements.
Pavement ant swarmers appear in late spring and can fly indoors, often toward fluorescent lights, while stink bugs resume feeding in April and May. Wipe up trails, repair leaks and walk the foundation before ants set up house indoors.
July highs near 94 and active wetlands bring peak mosquito pressure after dusk. Empty standing water, keep screens tight and check water meter and irrigation boxes, where black widows like to settle in dark, undisturbed gaps.
By late October stink bugs start gathering on homes to enter diapause, and black widows are still around foundations and wood piles. Caulk gaps, fit door sweeps, stack firewood away from walls and vacuum bugs from sunny siding.
