In a city this damp, that means drains, mulch, and gaps around the building. Its advice is to seal the perimeter and reduce excess moisture and organic matter around the home. Asian cockroaches look like German roaches but fly in after dark.
Culex mosquitoes
The state health department reports that West Nile virus tops the list of mosquito-borne illnesses reported in Alabama, spread mainly by Culex mosquitoes, and that mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk. Empty flowerpots, gutters, tires and pet dishes, scrub containers weekly, cover rain barrels, and fill low spots where Gulf downpours collect.
Imported fire ants
Colonies are active throughout Alabama, according to Extension. Bait in spring and fall when the weather is dry and no rain is coming for 12 to 24 hours, then treat mounds about a week later. Morning or evening works best, since ants forage less in midday heat, and a mound treatment a week later finishes the job.
Yellowjackets
Alabama Extension says yellowjackets nest underground in abandoned rodent holes and above ground in eaves, wall voids and crawlspaces, peaking in late summer and fall. Mowing near a burrow can trigger a swarm. Treat nests after dark, stay clear for 24 hours, and call a licensed professional for large or indoor nests.

Termites leave winter nests as it warms, and Extension says swarms usually follow rain on a warm, calm day. Formosan swarms follow in May and June after sunset. Fire ant bait goes out in spring.
