Drywood Termite Control in Sarasota

The University of Florida termite map records West Indian drywood termites across Sarasota, from the bayfront to neighborhoods east of U.S. 41, in collections dated 2016 through 2026. UF notes the species is most established in older buildings in the southern half of the state, and Sarasota still has houses from its 1920s boom. A colony stays inside the wood and betrays itself with tiny, hard, six-sided droppings that collect below pin-size openings. Winged adults leave mostly from April to June.

Subterranean termites

Two native species, the eastern and the dark southern subterranean termite, occur statewide and both appear in UF's Sarasota records. They nest in soil, need moisture and climb to wood through mud tubes. The more destructive Formosan subterranean termite has been collected several times east of the city since 2015, most recently in spring 2026. Soil grade, mulch depth and any sprinkler that wets the wall are the first things we check.

UF describes the ghost ant as found mostly from Sarasota to Orlando and south, so this city sits right on its home range. Workers are about 1.5 millimeters long, dark at the head and milky pale at the rear, and they favor sugary foods. A colony is really many small nests with several queens, tucked behind baseboards, inside potted plants or under loose bark, and it spreads by budding. Finding where trails enter, then baiting, works better than chasing ants with spray.

UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County calls the roof rat (the same animal as the black rat or ship rat) elusive, secretive and an able climber that keeps to trees and to the higher parts of houses. Fruit, seeds, pet food and garbage all feed it. The county office's advice is exclusion first: seal openings with hardware cloth or steel mesh, keep limbs from overhanging the roof, add rat guards to trunks and cap the chimney. For rats already inside it recommends snap traps.

How do I know if my Sarasota house has drywood termites?

Look for pellets. Drywood termites push dry, six-sided droppings out of openings one to two millimeters wide, and the pellets pile up on sills, floors or furniture below. Paint or thin wood that looks blistered is another sign, as are winged termites indoors in spring. There are no mud tubes, which separates them from subterranean termites.

Why do I have tiny see-through ants in my Sarasota kitchen?

Those are probably ghost ants. They are extremely small, with a dark head and a whitish abdomen and legs. They nest both outside and inside, including in potted plants and wall voids, and they go for sweets. Wiping up trails does little; baits carried back to the nests are what thin a colony.

Does Sarasota County control mosquitoes?

Yes. Sarasota County Mosquito Management Services monitors mosquito numbers, treats standing water with Bti, a bacterial larvicide that targets mosquito larvae, stocks mosquitofish and keeps sentinel chickens to detect mosquito-borne viruses.
