White-footed ants
UF researchers first collected the white-footed ant at a Homestead nursery in 1986, and Broward is on their list of infested counties. It neither bites nor stings, but colony estimates range from 8,000 ants up to 3 million. Trails climb exterior walls, slip through soffit vents and follow electrical cables to kitchens and baths. Nests sit in old palm boots, leaf litter, gutters and attics, so UF's rule is simple: no vegetation touching the walls.
Red imported fire ants
A fire ant colony grows to several thousand workers in about six months, which is when its mound first shows in a lawn. UF counts up to 4,500 winged ants in one mating flight, usually at midday on a warm, sunny day after rain, and swimming pools often trap them by the thousand. Mounds beside play areas and pool decks come first, because workers sting in numbers once the soil is disturbed.
Subterranean termites
Two invasive soil termites live in Broward County, the Formosan and the Asian, and telling them apart takes a soldier or a swarmer under magnification. What a homeowner sees is the same either way: mud tubes on a foundation, soil packed into damaged wood, or winged insects around the lights on a spring evening. UF's termite identification team names samples at no charge, and we can collect one during an inspection.
Roof rats
The roof rat, also called the black rat or ship rat, is a climber that UF/IFAS Extension places mainly in trees and in the upper levels of buildings. Keep limbs from hanging over the roof, fit rat guards on trunks, and close gaps around pipes and wires with hardware cloth or steel mesh. Extension favors snap traps, and warns that poisons can kill the owls and hawks that eat rats.
Local advice
Out west the water's edge belongs to green iguanas. The state wildlife commission notes that on cleared ground such as canal banks and vacant lots they shelter in burrows, culverts, drainage pipes and rock piles, and that their digging can collapse berms and sidewalks. Pull the plants they favor, fill empty holes, and hang wind chimes or reflective discs where they like to bask.
Spotted something?
When a cold snap arrives, UF notes, cold-stunned iguanas drop out of the trees to the ground. February opens the Asian subterranean termite flight season, with swarms at dusk into April. Dry weeks are the right time to trim palms and shrubs off the walls.
Formosan termites swarm after sunset through June, and fire ant mating flights follow warm rains. A pool surface dotted with winged ants after a storm is a known fire ant sign, so watch the lawn for new mounds over the following months.
White-footed ants release winged males and females in July and August in South Florida. Standing water is the other summer problem. Broward County Mosquito Control inspects on request; its staff tip, toss or treat breeding sites and may treat storm drains. Residents can ask online or by dialing 311.

Miramar dates to May 26, 1955, when it incorporated with fewer than 200 residents and took its name from the Miramar district of Havana. Developer A.L. Mailman had bought the land two years earlier and built 56 concrete, flat-roofed houses as a bedroom community for Miami and Fort Lauderdale. The 2020 census counted 134,721 people, fourth most in Broward County.
The original city ran only from Southwest 64th Avenue to University Drive. Today the limits reach from State Road 7 to half a mile west of U.S. 27, where the Everglades conservation area begins, and nearly 2 of its 31 square miles are water. The city says redevelopment is concentrated in the eastern quarter. For pest work that means two checklists: older block houses in the east, and lawns, shorelines and canal banks in the west.
