Termites, Roaches and Iguanas in West Palm Beach's Old Neighborhoods
Asian and Formosan subterranean termites
Palm Beach County has both of Florida's invasive subterranean termites. University of Florida entomologists documented established Asian colonies in Riviera Beach, just north of the city, in 2005, and the UF termite map now plots both species inside West Palm Beach. The Asian species swarms at dusk from February through April; Formosan flights run April into June, and the swarmers head for lights.
West Indian drywood termites
Cryptotermes brevis never touches soil. It lives inside dry lumber, and UF reports the heaviest populations in aged buildings across the lower half of the state. The window frames, trim and rafters of a 1920s house fit that description. Watch for tiny hard pellets, six-sided under a magnifier, heaped below a pinhole. When colonies are scattered through a structure, tenting and fumigation is the usual remedy; one limited to a single door or window frame can sometimes get a spot treatment.
American and Florida woods cockroaches
People here call two different roaches palmetto bugs. The American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) is the big reddish brown one; it breeds in sewers, mulch, woodpiles and hollow trees and follows the plumbing into houses when storms flood its haunts. The Florida woods cockroach (Eurycotis floridana) cannot fly, moves slowly and squirts a rank defensive fluid. It prefers leaf litter and tree holes and mostly gets inside as a hitchhiker. Drain screens and mulch kept off the walls reduce both.
Container-breeding mosquitoes
Palm Beach County Mosquito Control, a division of Environmental Resources Management, warns about Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, which lay eggs in any container that holds water, down to a bottle cap. Bromeliads are a favored nursery, which matters in a shaded tropical garden. The county links both mosquitoes to dengue, chikungunya and Zika. Its advice: drain or screen containers, dose bromeliads with Bti and keep mosquito-eating fish in ornamental ponds.
Local advice
Green iguanas are established in Palm Beach County, by the count of state wildlife officials at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). On the lagoon and the canals they sun themselves on seawalls and docks, and their burrows undermine canal banks, seawalls, walks and even foundations. Hibiscus and orchids get eaten, and droppings foul pool decks. FWC's first steps are taking out the plants iguanas like and filling the holes; for removal it refers owners to nuisance wildlife trappers.
Spotted something?
The native eastern subterranean termite flies first, on warm sunny afternoons from January to April. Asian termites take over at dusk from February, and Formosan and drywood swarms continue through June. A few winged termites near a lamp may have flown in from outside; wings in several rooms are another matter.
More than half the days bring an afternoon thunderstorm. Plant saucers, gutters and bromeliads refill constantly, so tip out what you can every week. Downpours also drive American cockroaches indoors, and the county sends out spray trucks and aircraft when mosquito counts or disease risk climb.
These months stay warm but drier, with the odd cold front. Iguanas are not cold hardy and turn sluggish in a cold snap. Use the break to mend screens and clean leaves out of gutters, where white-footed ants like to nest.

Yes. The University of Florida map has Formosan subterranean termite records in West Palm Beach dating to 1985, and the Asian subterranean termite, a close tropical relative, is established as well. Both swarm in the evening, and a Formosan colony can reach several million insects. If you catch swarmers between February and June, save a few for identification.
Locally the name gets attached to any large outdoor cockroach. Strictly it belongs to Eurycotis floridana, the Florida woods cockroach, a flightless roach that gives off a strong smell when disturbed. The big roaches found indoors are more often American cockroaches from sewers and yard debris, wandering in for food and water.
Yes. FWC treats the green iguana as an invasive species, covered only by the state's anti-cruelty rules. You, or someone you authorize, may humanely kill one on your own land in any month, but a trapped iguana cannot be turned loose elsewhere. To discourage them, FWC suggests pulling out favored plants, filling burrows and hanging wind chimes or shiny CDs.
