Ants, Dampwood Termites and Rats in Seattle's Wet, Cloudy Climate
Carpenter ants
WSU Extension says the western carpenter ant is the species most often found in western Washington buildings. These ants do not eat wood. They excavate it for nesting, and many house infestations are satellite nests of a parent colony living in some outdoor stump or log. Mating swarms generally fly from April to early June. Keep shrubs and branches off eaves, clear stumps and rotting logs, and stack firewood away from the house.
Dampwood termites
The dampwood termite is the largest termite in the region, and WSU says it lives and feeds in wet or rotting wood, not in dry, sound lumber. Finding one usually points to an earlier problem such as wood touching soil. Winged adults tend to swarm as summer ends or in autumn, especially after rain. Ventilate the crawl space, keep a vapor barrier in place and clear leftover form lumber from around the foundation.
Norway and roof rats
WSU Extension reports two main rats in Washington. The Norway rat has a tail shorter than its head and body and nests under buildings, in low shrubs and in woodpiles. The roof rat has a longer tail, climbs well and nests in attics, wall voids and vine-covered fences. Rodents are mostly active at night, and droppings, gnaw marks and greasy smudges on walls show where they travel.
Yellowjackets
Three yellowjackets are common in Washington, according to WSU: the German, the western and the aerial. Ground-nesting species often set up in wall voids or attics, and fertilized queens start a new colony each spring. By late summer and fall, WSU notes, workers are aggressive and may sting without provocation. A nest in your yard is a risk for people and pets, so call a professional instead of poking at it.
Mosquitoes and West Nile virus
Public Health Seattle and King County says West Nile virus was first detected in the county in 2006 and is now established in Washington. Birds carry the virus and mosquitoes pass it on to people and horses. The state Department of Health advises residents to empty anything that holds standing water and to repair holes in window and door screens. Buckets, birdbaths and old tires are easy places for larvae to grow.

Carpenter ant mating swarms generally fly in this window, according to WSU, and winged ants inside the house point to a nest nearby. Fertilized yellowjacket queens also start new colonies in spring, so check eaves, sheds and garden structures before the nests grow.
Yellowjacket workers turn aggressive as colonies peak, and dampwood termites take wing near summer's end, often following rain. Moisture ants also hold mating swarms around then. Keep drinks and trash covered outside, and watch window sills for shed wings.
Rats and mice look for shelter as the rain sets in. Seal gaps around pipes and vents, keep pet food and bird seed sealed, and trim shrubs away from the foundation so wet wood and soil dry out between storms.
