Mosquitoes
The city's Public Works Mosquito Control Bureau says Virginia Beach has at least 30 species of mosquitoes, and the season runs from May through early November, peaking in July and August. Crews keep ditches clear, treat breeding sites with larvicide from May to October and spray at night where adults are heavy. Norfolk health officials add that stagnant tidal ditches can produce mosquitoes and a teaspoon of water is enough.
Subterranean termites
Virginia Cooperative Extension says termites often attack wood touching or near soil. Their calling card is mud tubes and soil-packed galleries without sawdust, usually at or near ground level, and poorly drained soil that stays wet raises the risk. On a low, wet coastal lot, check porch posts, steps and sills, and leave treatment to a professional, as extension advises.
Rats and mice
The Norfolk Health Department says Norway rats nest in burrows along foundation walls, while roof rats prefer elevated spots and mainly eat seeds and fresh fruit and vegetables. State health officials add that mice need only a quarter-inch gap and rats half an inch. Droppings, gnaw marks, greasy rub marks and burrows are the usual signs.
Yellowjackets
Virginia Tech reports that yellowjackets are often pests in recreation areas from late summer until early autumn, when colonies are largest. Disturbed workers defend the nest aggressively, and serious reactions can occur in allergic people. Workers can fly a mile for food, so closed trash lids matter at Oceanfront cookouts. Extension says nest treatment is done late at night after locating it by day.
Bed bugs
Virginia Tech's factsheet says bed bugs feed mostly at night on human blood and hide in mattress tufts, seams and bed frame crevices, floor cracks and behind loose wallpaper. Extension says they can spread between rooms or units in hotels and apartment buildings. A resort city with steady travelers and short-term rentals sees luggage and furniture as common entry routes.

The city treats breeding sites from May through October, and the peak runs through July and August. Tip and toss containers weekly, clean gutters and empty birdbaths, and use mosquito dunks in water you cannot remove.
Colonies grow through summer and are largest in the fall, according to Virginia Tech, and disturbed workers sting in defense of the nest. Seal trash cans around Virginia Beach patios and campsites, and call for help instead of disturbing a nest in daylight.
