Rutgers lists seven cockroach species in New Jersey, with the German, American and Oriental the most common pests. Bed bugs

Heat above 120 degrees affects them, and mattress encasements help.
Asian tiger mosquitoes
The Rutgers Center for Vector Biology calls this species an opportunistic container breeder that needs only about 1/4 inch of water, and it is often linked to discarded tires. Essex County Mosquito Control adds that birdbaths, children's toys and abandoned pools are common sources. Dump and scrub small containers, and cover or drain pools you are not using.
House mice and rats
A Rutgers study of public housing in New Brunswick found rodents in 11 percent of apartments, behind cockroaches at 28 percent. Researchers said baits and traps combined with resident education worked better than foggers and sprays. Keep the kitchen clean, put food away and cut clutter. Close gaps around pipes and doors, and report sightings to maintenance right away.
